A tourist in San Francisco

Yesterday I did the tourist thing. I walked to Fishermans Wharf, sat on the upper level of a double-decker bus that toured downtown San Francisco, road the cable cars, walked to Chinatown, ate chowder out of a sour dough bread bowl. Yup, it was a unique experience, just like the one thousands of other tourists were having.

Seals at Pier 39. Tourists line up ten deep on the pier to look at the seals. They are incredibly noisy and the stench is almost intolerable. But the seals don't seem to mind.

A disaster in the next major earthquake

I bought chocolates for Cathy here.

I did stop into a camera shop to buy a second battery for my camera. My next few nights might be camping out (sleeping in my car) at national parks. Without a way to recharge the camera battery I felt it was prudent to purchase a second one. While there the manager showed me a new lens designed for the typical digital camera that attaches by way of a magnetic ring that fits between the lens and the camera. It allows for close-up photography and wide angle pictures. It also allows more light in so it is good for low light applications. I took the picture below with it.

At one point I realized I truly am on vacation, or unemployed, or without direction, or all of the above. I was walking past the Maritime Museum. A sign over the door read 'Closed for Renovation, Will Reopen in 2009'. I read the sign. Looked at my watch. Decided not to wait. Kept walking.

This constant moving from place to place like a fugative (I wonder what I am running from?) is starting to wear on me. I have realized that if I suddenly want to just pick up my toys and go home, its at least a four day drive to get there.
After I check out of the hotel this morning I will drive to Yosemite National Park. I had planned on fishing this weekend in Northern California with Bob Justice. Bob runs DSC's Tracy, CA facility. Unfortunately operational needs will keep Bob from taking a long weekend off. So my overall schedule is blown and I will be making the agenda up as I go from here on out.

Bye for now.

good to know that you are unique. . . Just like everyone else.
Enjoy Yosemite. And just for the record sleeping in your car is NOT camping :)

Sorry about your fishing plans. Thanks for calling last night. We were all glad to hear from you!

Greg, you're a dork! Highly intelligent, extremely creative and very lovable, but a dork none the less. Horrible puns. Wish I thought of them. I was going to give you a hard time about me not being photogenic, but then I looked through the pictures you gave me from my childhood and had to say, "yeah, he's right".

I know the Maritime museum, Jane and I were at the Fisherman's Wharf Holiday Inn just a few blocks from Ghirardelli and Maritime, and Pier 39, the seals, the Chowder bowl place, and all of that back in August. I too was disappointed that the museum was closed, but oh well, I never considered waiting around for them to show up.
BTW, the Ghirardelli chocolates......uh nevermind
